Understanding Samsung phones model number
While shopping for your new Samsung smartphone you will come across many model numbers, such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300, the Galaxy S4 GT-I9500, the Galaxy S4 LTE GT-I9505, or the Galaxy S4 mini Dual Sim GT-I9192. Understanding what these numbers mean will help you make sure you’re buying what you want to buy.
Let’s break down the Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 model number:
- GT: is the model class. There’s not much useful information here for you but for your general knowledge. GT is for models that are not branded for specific carriers, which is what all Samsung phones in the UAE are.
- I: is the model family. I is used for Samsung’s flagship devices within the family. Other possible letters are B for Business, N for the Galaxy Note family, P for the Galaxy Tab family (tablets), and S for lower-end devices. The Galaxy S4 is a flagship device, as was the S3. For Galaxy S5, Samsung has changed the naming scheme, we’ll get to that separately.
- 950: is the model number, in this case the model that we all know is the Galaxy S4.
- The last digit denotes the variation of that model, possible digits are:
- 0: this is the standard model, and is typically 3G and single sim.
- 5: denotes the LTE variation. Many online stores don’t necessarily specify in the product name whether the model is LTE or not, now you can simply look up the last digit of the model number and if it ends with 5 then you’re sure it supports LTE.
- 2: denotes a Dual Sim variation.
That’s it! Now you can browse Samsung phones and never mistake a 3G/LTE/single/dual phone again

Interesting. I had hoped Samsung itself would publish a comprehensive table to find the meaning of the various components of its model numbers e.g. for the S20 FE5G I find a model number SM-G781W. I cannot find the meaning of the W add on, but a medical program I want to use specifies SM-G781
